Tropical Ice

No—I’m not talking about snow cones or anything of that sort. After the Halloween Party, Harry invited me to go ice-skating. Yep—Ice skating in the tropics. Now before you get some image of Rockefeller Plaza in your head, let me explain. In one of the malls here there is an indoor ice rink on the top floor. It’s about the size of half-court basketball but there was plenty of room for the number of people there. Miracle of miracles they even had skates big enough for me!
Now Harry, had invited me and Ron was pretty excited about going too, but Sue seemed more than a bit reluctant. I had also invited Jackie to join us, but he too was a little uncertain due to lack of experience. Yet again, however, inhibitions fell away and we all enjoyed getting used to the ice again.
After 30 minutes or so and a few humorous bobbles by all of us I asked them if they had ever played “crack the whip.” As I explained the game and how the end person would go flying off when the whip was cracked, a look of terror and enthusiasm came over everyone—they weren’t too sure about the idea but we were having too much fun not to risk it. The result? A few more humorous bobbles, lots of laughter, and about an hour and a half of crack-the-whip interspersed with lots of photos, jokes, and stories as we got to know each other.
So next time someone says “meeting people is about as easy for me as trying to ice-skate on the equator” just smile and ask them to play crack the whip!
